Deputy PM: Mobile operators to merge base stations by 2030

MOSCOW, Jan 26 (PRIME) -- The Russian mobile operators will merge their base stations into a single network, which any subscriber can join, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko said late on Tuesday.

“In 2021, we reached an agreement with the connection operators on two fundamental issues. Frist, they will start using the base stations jointly, merge them into a unified network…Any subscriber will be able to get connected to it,” Chernyshenko told a government meeting.

The move will improve coverage along the key highways and in underpopulated areas. About 10,000 base stations will be merged by 2030, he said.

“When extending the permits for LTE frequencies, it was decided to cover the federal highways and towns with over 1,000 people with connection at the expense of the connection operators. It is planned to upgrade about 5,000 LTE base stations and build some 3,500 more to tackle the  matter,” the official said.

All the key highways will have stable mobile LTE connection in 2031 at latest.
